Canada wild rye prefers consistent moisture, especially during establishment. Water deeply once or twice a week in the absence of rain.

Reduce watering frequency as the plant matures, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid waterlogged conditions, which can lead to root rot.

Minimal pruning is required. Remove dead or damaged foliage in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges.

Cut back old flower stalks after seeds have dispersed if desired for a tidier appearance, but leaving them can provide winter interest and food for wildlife.

Canada wild rye is easily propagated by seed. Sow seeds in fall or early spring. Division of established clumps in early spring is also effective. Space divisions about 30-60 cm apart.

It readily self-seeds in suitable conditions.

Repotting is generally not applicable for this perennial grass when grown in its native habitat or established garden beds. If growing in containers, repot every 2-3 years in early spring into a slightly larger pot using a well-draining potting mix to prevent overcrowding.
