Pawpaws prefer consistent moisture, especially when young. Water deeply when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry. Avoid waterlogged conditions, as this can lead to root rot.

Reduce watering slightly during dormancy in winter but do not let the soil dry out completely.

Pruning is mainly for shaping and removing dead or crossing branches. Young trees benefit from structural pruning to establish a strong scaffold. Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.

Avoid heavy pruning, as pawpaws can be sensitive.

Pawpaws can be propagated by seed, but seedlings may take several years to fruit and might not come true to type. Grafting is a more reliable method for maintaining desired cultivars.

Seeds require stratification before sowing. Layering is also an option.

Pawpaw seedlings are best repotted when they are small, typically in their first or second year, to avoid disturbing the taproot. Use a well-draining potting mix.

Mature trees are generally planted directly in the ground and rarely require repotting.
