Cistus × PurpureusCistus × purpureus

Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, Cistus × purpureus is drought-tolerant and requires minimal supplemental watering.

Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings, especially in hot, dry conditions, to prevent root rot.

Prune after flowering to maintain a tidy shape and encourage bushier growth. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches at any time. Avoid heavy pruning into old wood, as this can stimulate poor regrowth.

Light trimming helps manage size and promotes a denser habit.

Propagate Cistus × purpureus from semi-hardwood cuttings taken in late summer or early autumn. Dip the cuttings in rooting hormone and insert them into a well-draining potting mix.

Keep the cuttings moist and provide a warm environment for successful rooting, which typically takes several weeks.

Repot young plants every 2-3 years, or when they become root-bound. Use a well-draining, gritty compost. Cistus × purpureus dislikes root disturbance, so handle the roots gently during repotting.

Water lightly after repotting and avoid fertilizing for a few weeks to allow the plant to establish.
