Clematis appreciate consistently moist soil, especially during their active growing season. Water deeply when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry. Avoid waterlogging, as this can lead to root rot.

Reduce watering in late autumn and winter when the plant is dormant.

Pruning depends on the group. Group 1: Prune immediately after flowering to remove dead wood. Group 2: Prune in late winter/early spring to remove weak stems and cut back to strong buds.

Group 3: Prune hard in late winter/early spring, cutting back to about 1-1. 5 meters from the ground.

Clematis can be propagated by seed, but germination can be slow and erratic. More reliably, vegetative propagation through cuttings taken in summer or layering in autumn yields better results.

Cuttings should be taken from semi-ripe wood and placed in a moist, well-draining medium.

Young Clematis plants benefit from repotting annually or biennially into a slightly larger container as their root systems develop. Established plants in the ground rarely need repotting.

If repotting a container-grown plant, do so in early spring before new growth begins.
