Pruning bananas primarily involves removing dead or damaged leaves and suckers. Suckers are new shoots that emerge from the base; typically, one or two strong suckers are left to replace the main fruiting stalk.

Remove all others to direct energy to the main plant and developing fruit.

Bananas are most commonly propagated by division of their underground corms or by planting the suckers that naturally emerge from the base of mature plants. Select healthy, vigorous suckers, carefully separate them with a sharp spade, ensuring they have some roots attached, and plant them in suitable soil.

Young banana plants may need repotting annually into larger containers as their root system expands. Choose a pot that is significantly larger than the current one, with good drainage.

Use a well-draining, peat-based potting mix. Mature plants may not require frequent repotting if planted in the ground.
