Xanthorrhoea MalacophyllaXanthorrhoea malacophylla

Water sparingly, allowing soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering is detrimental. In native habitats, it thrives on infrequent rainfall.

Reduce watering significantly during cooler months or when the plant is dormant to prevent root rot.

Minimal pruning is required. Remove dead or damaged leaves by pulling them off or using clean secateurs close to the trunk. Avoid cutting into the trunk itself.

Any flowering spikes can be removed after the flowering period to maintain a tidy appearance.

Propagation is best achieved from seed. Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours before sowing in a well-draining seed-raising mix. Germination can be slow and erratic.

Alternatively, offsets can be carefully separated from the parent plant and potted up.

Repotting is infrequently needed as Xanthorrhoea malacophylla is a slow-growing species. When necessary, typically for very young plants or if the current pot has become restrictive, use a well-draining potting mix.

Handle the root ball with care to avoid damage.
