Tiehm's MilkvetchAstragalus tiehmii

Detailed description not available.

Astragalus tiehmii, commonly known as Tiehm's Milkvetch, is a rare and geographically restricted species of flowering plant in the legume family, Fabaceae. This perennial herb is of significant botanical interest due to its limited distribution and specific ecological niche. It is a member of the vast Astragalus genus, which comprises over 3,000 species, many of which are adapted to arid and semi-arid environments. Tiehm's Milkvetch typically exhibits a low-growing, caespitose or clump-forming habit. The plant's stems are short and often prostrate or ascending, rarely exceeding a few centimeters in height. Its leaves are pinnately compound, meaning they are composed of several leaflets arranged along a central stalk. The leaflets are generally small, ovate to elliptical in shape, and can be somewhat hairy, contributing to the plant's adaptation to dry conditions by reducing water loss. The inflorescences are typically borne on short stalks that emerge from the leaf axils. The flowers are characteristic of the Astragalus genus, often appearing as pea-like structures. They are usually pale yellow to cream-colored, with a standard petal, two wing petals, and a keel formed by two fused petals. The fruit is a legume, a pod that develops after successful pollination and fertilization. The pods are typically small and contain a few seeds. The native distribution of Astragalus tiehmii is highly localized, primarily found in specific areas of Nye County, Nevada, in the United States. It thrives in arid and semi-arid habitats, often growing in gravelly soils, sandy substrates, or rocky slopes within desert scrub and pinyon-juniper woodlands. Its habitat is characterized by low rainfall, high solar radiation, and significant temperature fluctuations. Cultivation requirements for this species are not widely documented, but given its native habitat, it would likely require well-drained soil, full sun, and minimal watering once established, mimicking its natural desert environment. Ecologically, Tiehm's Milkvetch plays a role in its native desert ecosystem, contributing to plant diversity and potentially providing a food source for specialized herbivores or pollinators. As with many species in the Astragalus genus, it may have adaptations for survival in harsh conditions, such as deep root systems to access scarce water or mechanisms to tolerate drought. Specific documented economic, medicinal, or agricultural uses for Astragalus tiehmii are not established in scientific literature. Its primary significance lies in its botanical rarity and its contribution to the biodiversity of its restricted native range. The plant's survival is intrinsically linked to the health and stability of its unique desert habitat.
