Prunus africana prefers consistently moist soil, especially when young. Water deeply during dry periods, allowing the top few centimeters of soil to dry out slightly between waterings.

Avoid waterlogging, which can lead to root rot. Mature trees are more drought-tolerant.

Pruning is primarily for shaping young trees or removing dead, damaged, or crossing branches. For larger trees, minimal pruning is usually needed. If fruit production is desired, prune after fruiting.

Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.

Propagation is typically done from seeds, which require stratification for germination. Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours, then stratify in moist sand or peat moss at cool temperatures (around 4°C) for 90-120 days.

Cuttings are also possible but less common.

Repotting is generally not necessary for mature trees in their natural habitat. For container-grown specimens, repot young plants every 1-2 years into slightly larger containers. Use a well-draining potting mix.

Repot in spring before active growth begins.
