American Wisteria thrives with consistent moisture, especially during establishment and flowering. Water deeply when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry. Reduce watering in fall as the plant enters dormancy.

Avoid waterlogged conditions, which can lead to root rot. Established plants are moderately drought-tolerant.

Prune in late winter to remove dead or damaged wood and to shape the plant. Summer pruning, after the initial bloom, can encourage reblooming and control size.

Prune to encourage flowering wood by removing any wispy, non-flowering shoots.

American Wisteria can be propagated by seed, but this is slow and may not result in true-to-type plants.

Stem cuttings taken in late spring or early summer, treated with rooting hormone, and kept in moist conditions are more reliable. Layering is also a successful method.

Repot young plants annually or biennially in spring before new growth starts. Use a well-draining potting mix. For mature plants, repotting is rarely necessary. If rootbound, select a pot one size larger.
