Watering, pruning, propagation, and repotting details from plant data
Apiopetalum velutinum prefers consistently moist soil but dislikes waterlogged conditions. Water thoroughly when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry to the touch.
Reduce watering slightly during cooler months, allowing the soil to dry out a bit more between waterings. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.
Prune Apiopetalum velutinum to maintain its shape and encourage bushier growth. Lightly pinch back the tips of new shoots in spring to promote branching. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches at any time.
Pruning is generally minimal, focusing on aesthetic refinement.
Apiopetalum velutinum can be propagated from stem cuttings taken in spring or early summer. Select healthy, non-flowering stems, and take cuttings about 10-15 cm long.
Plant them in a well-draining potting mix and keep the soil consistently moist and the humidity high. Rooting typically takes several weeks.
Repot Apiopetalum velutinum every 2-3 years, or when it becomes root-bound. Use a slightly larger pot with fresh, well-draining potting mix. Spring is the ideal time for repotting, just as new growth begins.
Handle the roots gently to minimize transplant shock and ensure immediate watering.
