Watering, pruning, propagation, and repotting details from plant data
Water Arenaria gothica regularly during the growing season, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering significantly in winter, providing just enough to prevent complete desiccation.
Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot, as this species dislikes soggy conditions.
Prune Arenaria gothica after flowering to maintain a neat shape and encourage a more compact habit. Trim back any leggy stems. Deadhead spent blooms to prevent self-seeding if not desired.
Light trimming can also be done in early spring before new growth begins.
Propagate Arenaria gothica by division in early spring or autumn. Carefully separate clumps, ensuring each section has roots and shoots.
Alternatively, take cuttings in late spring or early summer and root them in a well-draining medium. Seed propagation is also possible but may be slower.
Repot Arenaria gothica every 2-3 years or when it becomes root-bound, preferably in spring before active growth commences. Use a well-draining potting mix, such as a blend of loam, sand, and perlite.
Ensure the new pot offers adequate drainage to prevent waterlogging.
