Water regularly during the growing season, keeping the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Reduce watering significantly during dormancy.

Allow the top few centimeters of soil to dry out between waterings in active growth periods. Avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal diseases.

Remove spent flower spikes as they fade to encourage further blooming and prevent seed production, which can drain energy.

Cut back foliage only after it has yellowed and died back naturally in late autumn or early winter. This allows the plant to store energy for the next season.

Gladiolus tristis is typically propagated by corms. Cormels (small corms) produced at the base of the parent corm can be separated after the foliage dies back and replanted in the spring.

Allow corms to mature for a few weeks after lifting before replanting.

Repot gladiolus corms annually or every other year, ideally in early spring before new growth emerges. This provides fresh soil and allows for separation of cormels.

Ensure the new pot offers good drainage and is at least 15-20 cm deep to accommodate root growth.
