Betony prefers consistently moist soil, especially during its growth period. Water thoroughly when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry. Avoid waterlogging, as this can lead to root rot.

Reduce watering in cooler months, allowing the soil to dry out slightly more between waterings.

Deadhead spent flower spikes to encourage further blooming and maintain a tidy appearance. In late autumn or early spring, cut back the old foliage to the ground.

This removes dead material, promotes new growth, and helps prevent disease. Light trimming throughout the season can also maintain shape.

Betony is easily propagated by division of established clumps in early spring or autumn. Alternatively, sow seeds outdoors in spring or indoors a few weeks before the last frost.

Softwood cuttings can also be taken in late spring or early summer, rooted in moist, well-draining compost.

Young plants may benefit from repotting annually or every two years in spring to refresh the soil and accommodate root growth. Established plants in the ground rarely need repotting and are best left undisturbed.

If repotting is necessary, choose a pot only slightly larger than the current one.
