Watering, pruning, propagation, and repotting details from plant data
Water regularly during the growing season, keeping the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Reduce watering in autumn and winter, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings.
Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot, especially in containers.
Remove spent flower stalks after blooming to encourage a tidier appearance and potentially a second flush of flowers. Cut back dead or damaged foliage in late autumn or early spring before new growth emerges.
Minimal pruning is typically required.
Propagate by seed sown in autumn or early spring. Division of established clumps in early spring is also effective. Ensure seeds are sown in well-draining compost and kept moist.
Young plants should be hardened off before transplanting outdoors.
Repot container-grown plants every 2-3 years in early spring, or when they become root-bound. Use a well-draining potting mix, such as a loam-based compost with added grit. Ensure the new pot has adequate drainage holes.
