Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, especially during fruit development. Water deeply at the base of the plant, avoiding overhead watering to minimize disease risk.

Reduce watering slightly in late fall as the plant enters dormancy.

Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Remove any dead, damaged, or weak canes. Tip back primocanes (first-year canes) to encourage branching and fruiting on floricanes (second-year canes).

Remove floricanes immediately after fruiting.

Black raspberries are best propagated by layering. In late summer, bend a long primocane to the ground and bury the tip in moist soil.

Once rooted, typically by the following spring, sever the rooted tip from the parent plant and transplant.

Not applicable for established field-grown plants. For container-grown plants, repot into a larger container every 2-3 years in early spring before active growth commences, using a well-draining potting mix.
