Water Blackthorn regularly during its establishment phase. Once mature, it is highly drought-tolerant and prefers well-drained soil. Avoid waterlogged conditions, which can lead to root rot.

Allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings, especially in hot weather.

Pruning is primarily done to shape the plant, remove dead or diseased wood, and manage suckers. For hedges, prune annually in late winter or early spring.

For specimen plants, remove crossing branches and any damaged or awkward growth to maintain a desirable structure.

Blackthorn can be propagated by seed, which requires stratification (cold treatment) to germinate. It also readily spreads via root suckers, which can be dug up and transplanted.

Cuttings are less common but can be attempted from semi-hardwood in summer.

Repotting is generally not necessary for Blackthorn as it is typically grown outdoors as a shrub or tree. If container-grown specimens become root-bound, they can be transplanted into a larger pot in early spring before new growth begins, using a well-draining soil mix.
