Box elders are moderately drought-tolerant once established. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings.

Young trees and those in containers will require more frequent watering, especially during hot, dry periods. Avoid waterlogged conditions, which can lead to root rot.

Prune box elders in late winter or early spring while dormant to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Pruning can also be done to shape the tree or control its size.

Avoid heavy pruning in summer, as it can lead to excessive sap bleeding. Ensure cuts are clean and made just outside the branch collar.

Box elders are easily propagated from seeds sown in autumn or after stratification. Softwood or semi-hardwood cuttings can also be taken in summer and rooted under mist. Layering is another effective method.

Seeds often germinate readily without special treatment, but stratification can improve uniformity.

Container-grown box elders benefit from repotting every 2-3 years. Repot in early spring before new growth begins. Use a well-draining potting mix.

If the roots are tightly bound, gently loosen them before placing the tree in a slightly larger pot. Ensure adequate drainage holes.
