Overwatering can lead to root rot, so good drainage is essential.

Prune after flowering to shape the shrub and remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Mock oranges bloom on old wood, so avoid heavy pruning in late winter or spring, as this will remove the flower buds.

Thin out older stems to encourage new growth.

Propagate by softwood cuttings taken in late spring or early summer. Alternatively, hardwood cuttings can be taken in autumn.

Layering is also an effective method, where a low-growing stem is bent down and covered with soil to root. Seeds can be sown in autumn.

Repot young plants every 2-3 years or when they become root-bound. Use a well-draining potting mix. Established shrubs in the ground rarely need repotting and are best left undisturbed to maximize flowering.
