Leptochloa fusca is a wetland species and thrives in consistently moist to waterlogged conditions. Water regularly, ensuring the soil never dries out completely.

In pots, maintain a water level that keeps the base submerged or the soil saturated, especially during active growth. Reduce watering slightly in cooler months but avoid drought stress.

Pruning is primarily for maintenance and aesthetic purposes. Remove dead or yellowing foliage as it appears.

To maintain a tidy appearance or to control size, you can cut back the entire plant by about one-third in early spring before new growth begins. Spent flower stalks can also be trimmed to prevent self-seeding if desired.

Leptochloa fusca is easily propagated by division of established clumps in spring or early summer.

Simply dig up the plant and carefully separate the root ball into smaller sections, ensuring each section has roots and shoots. Replant divisions immediately into moist soil.
