Aquilegia nigricans prefers consistent moisture, especially during dry periods. Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry, avoiding waterlogged conditions.

Established plants are somewhat drought-tolerant but perform best with regular watering. Reduce watering in late fall and winter to prevent root rot.

Deadhead spent flowers to encourage reblooming and prevent self-seeding if unwanted. After flowering, you can cut back the entire plant to about 15 cm from the ground to promote tidier growth and a potential second flush of blooms in late summer or fall.

Aquilegia nigricans can be propagated by division of established clumps in early spring or fall. Seeds can be sown outdoors in fall or stratified indoors in the refrigerator for 4-6 weeks before sowing in spring.
