Calycanthus fertilis prefers consistent moisture, especially when young and during dry spells. Water deeply when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry. Avoid waterlogging, as this can lead to root rot.

Prune Calycantus fertilis after flowering to shape the plant and remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches. This also encourages a more compact growth habit and can improve air circulation within the shrub.

Propagation can be done through softwood cuttings taken in late spring or semi-hardwood cuttings taken in mid-summer. Layering is another effective method. Sow seeds in autumn or after a period of cold stratification.

Repotting is rarely necessary for established Calycantus fertilis as they prefer to be left undisturbed. If a young plant becomes root-bound in a container, repot it in spring into a slightly larger pot with well-draining soil.
