Celastrus australis prefers consistently moist soil, especially during its active growth period. Water deeply when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry.

Reduce watering frequency in winter, allowing the soil to dry out slightly more between waterings. Avoid waterlogged conditions, which can lead to root rot.

Prune Celastrus australis in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches to maintain a healthy structure.

Pruning can also be used to control size and shape, and to encourage more vigorous flowering and fruiting by thinning out old wood.

Propagate Celastrus australis from semi-hardwood cuttings taken in summer. Select healthy shoots, cut them into 10-15 cm lengths, and remove lower leaves.

Dip the cut end in rooting hormone and insert into a well-draining potting mix. Keep moist and warm, and transplant when roots have formed.

Repot young Celastrus australis plants every 1-2 years in spring, or when they become root-bound. Use a slightly larger pot with fresh, well-draining potting mix. Mature plants may only need repotting every 3-4 years.

Ensure adequate drainage holes in the pot to prevent waterlogging.
