Water chia regularly, keeping the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, especially during the active growing season. Reduce watering significantly in cooler months.

Allow the top few centimeters of soil to dry out between waterings to prevent root rot.

Pruning chia is primarily done to manage its size and shape or to encourage bushier growth. Pinch back the tips of young plants to promote branching. Remove any dead or damaged stems as needed.

Pruning can also be done after flowering to tidy up the plant.

Chia can be easily propagated from seeds. Sow seeds directly into well-draining soil in spring after the last frost. Seeds germinate quickly.

You can also propagate from stem cuttings taken in spring or early summer, which should be allowed to callus before planting.

Chia is often grown as an annual or can be treated as such. If grown as a perennial or if it becomes root-bound in a container, repot in spring into a slightly larger pot with fresh, well-draining potting mix.

Ensure the new pot has adequate drainage holes.
