Watering, pruning, propagation, and repotting details from plant data
Aralia chinensis prefers consistently moist soil but not waterlogged conditions. Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry, especially during dry periods and warmer months.
Reduce watering in winter when growth slows. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot, as the plant dislikes standing water.
Prune Aralia chinensis in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches.
You can also prune to control size and shape, or to encourage a bushier habit by cutting back to an outward-facing bud. Mature trees benefit from thinning.
Aralia chinensis can be propagated from seeds sown in autumn or spring, requiring a period of cold stratification.
It also readily propagates from root cuttings taken in winter or from softwood cuttings taken in early summer. Ensure cuttings are kept moist and warm for best results.
Repot young plants every 2-3 years in spring, moving them to a slightly larger container. Mature trees in the ground rarely need repotting. Ensure the new pot has ample drainage holes. Use a well-draining potting mix.
Repotting is mainly for container-grown specimens to refresh soil and provide space.
