Water regularly, especially during the first year after planting. Cornus sanguinea prefers consistently moist soil but dislikes waterlogged conditions. Water deeply when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry.

Reduce watering frequency as the plant becomes established, but water during prolonged dry spells.

Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. To encourage vibrant stem color, cut back stems to about 10-15 cm from the ground.

For shaping or removing dead/diseased wood, make clean cuts just above a bud. This rejuvenation pruning stimulates vigorous new shoots.

Propagate by softwood cuttings taken in early summer or hardwood cuttings taken in late autumn/winter. For softwood cuttings, dip the cut end in rooting hormone and plant in a moist, well-draining medium.

Hardwood cuttings can be planted directly into a prepared bed outdoors.

Repot young plants in spring before active growth begins, or when root-bound. Use a slightly larger pot with good drainage. Ensure the potting mix is well-draining.

Water thoroughly after repotting and place in a shaded location for a few weeks to allow the plant to recover.
