Crack Willows thrive in consistently moist soil. Water deeply when the top 5-10 cm of soil feels dry, especially during dry spells. Avoid waterlogged conditions, which can lead to root rot.

Mature trees are somewhat drought-tolerant but perform best with regular watering.

Prune Crack Willows in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Pruning can also be used to shape the tree or control its size.

For young trees, focus on establishing a strong central leader and well-spaced scaffold branches.

Crack Willows are easily propagated from stem cuttings. Take 15-30 cm cuttings in late autumn or winter from healthy, dormant wood.

Insert the cuttings into moist potting mix or directly into the ground in a protected location. Roots typically form within a few months.

Repotting is generally not applicable to Crack Willows as they are typically planted as large trees.

If growing a young tree in a container, repot every 2-3 years into a slightly larger container with fresh, well-draining potting mix. This should be done in early spring before new growth starts.
