Crape Myrtles require regular watering during their first year to establish a strong root system.

Once established, they are quite drought-tolerant but benefit from deep watering during prolonged dry spells, especially when flowering. Avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot.

Prune Crape Myrtles in late winter or early spring while they are dormant. Focus on removing dead, damaged, or crossing branches to improve air circulation and plant health.

Shape the plant by selectively removing inward-growing or weak shoots. Deadhead spent flowers during the blooming season to encourage reblooming.

Avoid severe topping, often called "crape murder," as it creates weak, unattractive growth and can reduce flowering.

Crape Myrtles are readily propagated from softwood cuttings taken in late spring or early summer. Select healthy, non-flowering stems about 15-20 cm long.

Remove lower leaves and dip the cut end in rooting hormone before planting in a well-draining propagation mix. Keep the medium consistently moist and provide warmth and indirect light.

Hardwood cuttings can also be taken in winter, though success rates may vary.

Repot container-grown Crape Myrtles every 2-3 years, ideally in late winter or early spring before active growth begins. Choose a pot that is one size larger than the current one, ensuring it has ample drainage holes.

Use a high-quality, well-draining potting mix. Gently remove the plant, loosen any circling roots, and place it in the new pot at the same depth. Water thoroughly after repotting.
