Eastern Hemlock prefers consistently moist, well-drained soil. Water deeply during dry spells, especially when young or in containers. Avoid waterlogged conditions, which can lead to root rot.

Reduce watering in winter when the plant is dormant, but do not let the soil dry out completely.

Pruning is generally minimal, focused on removing dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Light shearing can be done in late spring or early summer to shape the plant.

Avoid heavy pruning, as it can stress the tree and make it susceptible to pests and diseases.

Eastern Hemlock can be propagated from seeds, which require stratification, or from semi-hardwood cuttings taken in summer. Cuttings should be treated with rooting hormone and planted in a well-draining medium.

Patience is key, as both methods can be slow.

Repot container-grown Eastern Hemlocks every 2-3 years in early spring before new growth begins. Use a well-draining potting mix, preferably one formulated for conifers or acid-loving plants.

Choose a pot that is slightly larger than the current one to avoid shocking the roots.
