Water regularly during the growing season, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Reduce watering significantly in winter when the plant is dormant.

Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot, especially in containers. Overwatering is the most common cause of problems.

Prune back dead or damaged stems in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Deadheading spent flower stalks can encourage a longer blooming period and prevent self-seeding if not desired.
