Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering is the most common cause of rot. In winter, reduce watering significantly to mimic its dormant period.

Ensure good drainage to prevent waterlogging, which can quickly damage the roots of Opuntia engelmannii.

Prune to remove damaged or diseased pads, or to control size and shape. Use a clean, sharp knife or saw. Allow cut surfaces to callus over before replanting or leaving them exposed.

Pruning is best done in spring or early summer, allowing wounds to heal before cooler, wetter weather.

Propagate by detaching pads (cladodes) during the growing season. Let the cut end callus over for several days to a week. Then, plant the callused end in well-draining cactus soil.

Keep slightly moist until roots form, which can take several weeks to a few months.

Repot only when necessary, typically when the cactus becomes root-bound or outgrows its container. This is usually every 2-3 years. Use a well-draining cactus mix and a pot with drainage holes.
