Watering, pruning, propagation, and repotting details from plant data
Water consistently during the growing season, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering in fall and winter, especially if grown in cooler conditions.
Avoid waterlogged soil, which can lead to root rot. Ensure good drainage to promote healthy root development.
Deadheading spent flowers can encourage a longer bloom period and prevent seed formation. After flowering, you can trim back any yellowing or leggy foliage to maintain a tidy appearance.
Avoid heavy pruning; this plant prefers a more natural form. Minimal intervention is usually best.
Propagate hillside arnica from seed sown in autumn or early spring, or by dividing established clumps in early spring. Seeds may require a period of cold stratification to germinate.
Division is a straightforward method for increasing your stock of this attractive native plant.
Repotting is rarely necessary for Arnica fulgens, as it prefers to remain undisturbed in its chosen location.
If grown in a container, repot only when the plant becomes root-bound, typically every 2-3 years, using a well-draining potting mix. Spring is the ideal time for repotting.
