Alder buckthorn prefers consistently moist soil but can tolerate occasional dry spells once established. Water deeply when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry. Avoid waterlogging, which can lead to root rot.

Reduced watering may be necessary during winter dormancy to prevent over-saturation.

Prune alder buckthorn to maintain its shape and remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches. This can be done in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.

For hedging, more frequent trimming may be needed to encourage density. Avoid heavy pruning during the hottest months.

Alder buckthorn can be propagated from seed, which requires stratification. Seeds should be collected after the berries have ripened.

Alternatively, softwood cuttings can be taken in early summer and treated with rooting hormone. Semi-hardwood cuttings taken in late summer may also root successfully.

Repotting is rarely necessary for established alder buckthorn plants, as they are often grown as shrubs or trees in the landscape. If grown in a container, repot every 2-3 years in spring when the plant is dormant.

Use a well-draining potting mix and a slightly larger container.
