Gooseberries prefer consistently moist soil, especially during fruit development. Water deeply when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry. Avoid waterlogging, which can lead to root rot.

Reduce watering slightly in late summer after harvest to allow the plant to harden off for winter.

Prune in late winter or early spring while the plant is dormant. Remove any dead, diseased, or crossing branches. Aim to open up the center of the bush to improve air circulation and light penetration.

Fruit is borne on older wood, so preserve spurs on 2-3 year old stems.

Gooseberries are best propagated by hardwood cuttings taken in late autumn after leaf fall.

Select healthy, one-year-old shoots, cut them into 15-20 cm lengths, and insert them into moist potting compost or well-drained soil. Rooting typically occurs by spring.

Container-grown gooseberries may need repotting every 2-3 years, or when the plant becomes root-bound. Repot in early spring before new growth begins.
