Dioscorea alata prefers consistently moist soil. Water deeply when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry, especially during active growth. Reduce watering in cooler months and when the plant is dormant.

Avoid waterlogged conditions, which can lead to root rot. Ensure good drainage.

Prune away any dead, damaged, or diseased stems as they appear. In late autumn, after the foliage has yellowed and died back, cut the stems down to the ground.

This encourages vigorous new growth in the following spring and helps prevent disease.

Dioscorea alata is typically propagated vegetatively from tubers or bulbils. Cut mature tubers into pieces, ensuring each piece has at least one bud. Plant these pieces about 10-15 cm deep in well-draining soil.

Alternatively, plant bulbils in spring.

Repotting is generally only necessary if the plant is grown in a container and has outgrown its space, typically every 2-3 years. Do this in early spring before new growth emerges.
