Hydrangeas are thirsty plants and require consistent moisture. Water deeply at the base of the plant, especially during hot, dry periods and when the plant is establishing.

Allow the top inch of soil to dry slightly between waterings, but avoid letting the plant wilt.

Pruning depends on the species. Bigleaf and smooth hydrangeas bloom on old wood; prune after flowering to shape.

Panicle and smooth hydrangeas bloom on new wood; prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins to encourage larger blooms. Remove dead or damaged branches anytime.

Hydrangeas are easily propagated from stem cuttings. In mid-summer, take 6-8 inch cuttings from non-flowering stems. Remove lower leaves and dip the cut end in rooting hormone.

Plant in a moist, well-draining potting mix and keep humid until roots form, typically within 4-6 weeks.

Repot container-grown hydrangeas every 2-3 years, or when they become root-bound. Choose a pot that is slightly larger than the current one. Use a well-draining potting mix.

Repot in early spring before new growth starts or in fall after flowering to minimize stress.
