Watering, pruning, propagation, and repotting details from plant data
Water moderately during the growing season (autumn through spring), allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering significantly in summer when the plant goes dormant.
Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot, especially when the plant is actively growing.
Remove any yellowing or dead leaves as they appear to maintain the plant's aesthetic and prevent disease. Trim back any faded flower spikes after blooming.
No significant pruning is typically required, as the plant naturally dies back in summer.
Propagate by division of tubers in late summer or early autumn as the plant begins to emerge from dormancy. Seeds can also be sown in autumn, but germination may be slow and erratic.
Ensure divisions or seeds have healthy roots for successful establishment.
Repot every 2-3 years in early autumn, or when the plant becomes root-bound. Use a well-draining potting mix, such as a peat-based compost with added perlite or grit.
Choose a pot that is slightly larger than the current one to accommodate root growth.
