Japanese knotweed thrives in consistently moist soil, especially during its establishment phase. Water deeply when the top few centimeters of soil feel dry.

Once established, it becomes quite drought-tolerant, but regular watering will promote lusher growth and prevent stress. Avoid waterlogged conditions, which can lead to root rot.

Pruning is primarily for containment and management due to its invasive nature. Cut back stems to the ground in late winter or early spring to manage size and density. Dead or damaged stems should be removed as needed.

Aggressive cutting back can weaken the plant, but complete eradication is difficult.

Japanese knotweed is notoriously easy to propagate, often unintentionally through rhizome fragments. Small pieces of rhizome, even a few centimeters long, can establish new plants.

It can also be propagated from stem cuttings taken in summer. Seeds are rarely produced and usually not viable.

Repotting is generally not applicable or recommended for Japanese knotweed, as it is a perennial invasive plant best managed in situ.

If attempting to grow in a container for containment purposes, use a very large, sturdy container with a robust barrier to prevent escape. Repotting would involve extensive root division, which is best avoided.
