Madonna LilyLilium candidum

Madonna Lilies require consistent moisture, especially during their active growth period in spring and summer.

Water deeply when the top few centimeters of soil feel dry, but ensure excellent drainage to prevent bulb rot. Reduce watering significantly as the foliage dies back in late summer and during winter dormancy.

Deadhead spent flowers by snapping off individual blooms to prevent seed formation and redirect the plant's energy back into the bulb.

Once all flowers on a stem have faded, cut the entire flower stalk back to the ground only after the foliage has naturally yellowed and died.

It is crucial not to remove green foliage prematurely, as it is essential for photosynthesis and replenishing the bulb's energy for the following season.

Madonna Lilies can be propagated by several methods. Bulb scaling is common: carefully remove healthy scales from a mature bulb, plant them in moist sand or vermiculite, and new bulblets will form.

Division of offsets from established clumps is also effective and best done during the plant's dormant period. Propagation from seeds is possible but takes longer to reach flowering maturity.

Bulbils, if present on the stem, can also be removed and planted.

For container-grown Madonna Lilies, repotting is typically needed every 2-3 years during their dormant period, ideally in late summer or early autumn.

Choose a pot only slightly larger than the current one, ensuring it has excellent drainage holes. Use a fresh, well-draining, fertile potting mix.

Plant the bulb with its nose just at or slightly below the soil surface, as these lilies prefer shallow planting. This refreshes the soil and provides room for growth.
