Pruning primarily involves removing dead or yellowing leaves and spent flower stalks to maintain plant vigor and appearance. In late autumn, after the growing season, cut back all foliage to just above the water line to prepare the plant for dormancy and prevent debris from accumulating in the water.

Zizania latifolia is most commonly propagated by dividing its rhizomes in spring or early summer.

Carefully lift a clump from the water, separate sections with healthy roots and shoots, and replant them in suitable aquatic soil.

It can also self-seed, though rhizome division is more reliable for establishing new plants.

For plants grown in containers within water gardens, repotting may be necessary every 1-2 years to prevent them from becoming root-bound. Use large, sturdy aquatic pots filled with heavy loam or specialized aquatic soil.
