Maytenus boaria prefers consistent moisture but dislikes waterlogged soil. Water deeply when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry. Reduce watering during winter months when the plant is dormant.

Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot, especially in containers.

Prune Mayten to shape and remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Light pruning can be done anytime, but heavier pruning is best performed in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.

This encourages denser foliage and a more attractive form.

Mayten can be propagated from semi-hardwood cuttings taken in summer. Insert cuttings into a well-draining potting mix and keep moist in a warm, humid environment until rooting occurs.

Alternatively, seeds can be sown in spring, but germination can be slow and erratic.

Young Mayten plants may need repotting every 2-3 years, while mature specimens can remain in their pots for longer. Repot in spring just as new growth appears, using a good quality, well-draining potting mix.
