Melinis scabrida prefers infrequent watering, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot.

During prolonged dry spells, provide a deep watering to ensure soil moisture reaches the root zone. Reduce watering significantly during cooler months or when the plant is dormant.

Prune Melinis scabrida in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Cut back old, dead, or damaged foliage to about 5-10 cm from the ground.

This encourages vigorous new growth and maintains the plant's attractive form and density. Remove any flower stalks that have gone to seed.

Propagation is typically achieved through division of established clumps in spring. Carefully separate the root ball into smaller sections, ensuring each piece has roots and shoots.

Replant the divisions immediately into well-draining soil, watering them in to help them establish.

Melinis scabrida does not require frequent repotting and prefers to be slightly root-bound. If the plant outgrows its container or drainage becomes an issue, repot in spring into a slightly larger pot.
