Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Reduce watering significantly during the dormant winter months. Overwatering is the most common cause of rot for Astrophytum ornatum.

Ensure pots have excellent drainage.

Pruning is generally not required for Astrophytum ornatum. If any part of the plant becomes damaged or diseased, it can be carefully removed with a sterile knife to prevent further spread. This is rare.

Propagation is primarily done by seed. Sow seeds in a well-draining cactus mix in spring or summer. Keep the soil consistently moist and warm, around 20-25°C, to encourage germination.

Grafting is also an option for faster results.

Repot young plants every 1-2 years, and mature plants every 3-4 years, or when they outgrow their pot. Do this in spring before the active growing season begins. Use a gritty, fast-draining cactus mix.
