Genista monspessulana prefers well-drained soil and is drought-tolerant once established. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.

Reduce watering significantly during winter to prevent root rot. Overwatering is a common cause of failure.

Prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage bushier growth. Remove spent flower stalks and any dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Hard pruning into old wood is generally not recommended as it may not regrow.

Light shaping is best.

Easily propagated from seed, which may require scarification or stratification to break dormancy. Sow seeds in spring or autumn.

Cuttings can also be taken from semi-hardwood in summer, treated with rooting hormone, and planted in a well-drained medium.

Young plants may need repotting every 1-2 years. Choose a pot that is only slightly larger than the current one, with ample drainage holes. Use a well-draining potting mix, such as a sandy loam or a cactus mix.

Avoid disturbing the roots excessively.
