Watering, pruning, propagation, and repotting details from plant data
Water moderately during the growing season, allowing the top few centimeters of soil to dry out between waterings. Reduce watering significantly in winter, providing just enough to prevent complete soil desiccation.
Ensure good drainage to avoid waterlogging, which can lead to root rot.
Pruning is generally minimal for Araucaria laubenfelsii, primarily focused on removing dead, damaged, or diseased branches.
If shaping is desired, do so cautiously in spring, making clean cuts to avoid excessive sap loss. Avoid heavy pruning, as it can stress the tree.
Propagation is typically done by seed, though germination can be slow and erratic. Cuttings are difficult to root.
For seed propagation, sow fresh seeds in a well-draining seed-starting mix and keep them consistently moist and warm. Patience is key for successful germination.
Repot young plants every 2-3 years, and mature plants less frequently, as needed when root-bound. Use a well-draining, slightly acidic potting mix. Choose a pot that is only slightly larger than the current root ball.
Repot in spring before active growth begins.
