Southern Cattail thrives in consistently moist to waterlogged conditions. Keep the soil saturated or submerge the base of the plant in shallow water (5-15 cm deep).

Regular watering is essential, especially during warmer months, to mimic its natural wetland habitat and prevent drying out.

Prune dead or damaged foliage as needed throughout the growing season to maintain a tidy appearance and prevent disease. In late autumn or early winter, after flowering and seed dispersal, you can cut back the dead brown stems and leaves to just above the water line.

Southern Cattail is easily propagated by dividing established root clumps in early spring before new growth begins. Seeds can also be sown in shallow water or moist soil in spring, though division is generally more reliable for producing identical plants.

Repotting is typically only necessary if the plant becomes root-bound or outgrows its container. This is best done in early spring.

Use a large, sturdy aquatic plant pot with drainage holes and fill with heavy garden soil or aquatic potting mix. Ensure the rhizomes are just below the surface.
