Mature trees are more drought-tolerant but benefit from watering during prolonged dry spells to maintain healthy growth and vibrant fall color.

Prune Chinese tupelo in late winter while the tree is dormant. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Aim to establish a strong central leader and a well-spaced scaffold branch system.

Minimal pruning is generally needed once the tree's structure is formed.

Propagation is typically done from seed, which requires a period of cold stratification.

Alternatively, cuttings can be taken from semi-hardwood in summer and rooted under humid conditions with the aid of rooting hormone. Grafting is also a successful method for cultivar propagation.
