Watering, pruning, propagation, and repotting details from plant data
Petunia occidentalis prefers consistently moist soil, but dislikes waterlogged conditions. Water thoroughly when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry. Reduce watering slightly in cooler months.
Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot, especially in containers. Overwatering can lead to fungal issues.
Regularly deadhead spent flowers to encourage more blooms and maintain a tidy appearance. Pinch back leggy stems to promote bushier growth.
Light pruning can be done in late winter or early spring to shape the plant and remove any dead or damaged branches. This encourages vigorous new growth.
Petunia occidentalis can be easily propagated from stem cuttings taken in spring or early summer. Select healthy, non-flowering shoots, cut them to 7-10 cm long, and remove lower leaves.
Insert cuttings into a moist, well-draining potting mix and keep them in a warm, humid environment until rooted.
Repot Petunia occidentalis every 1-2 years, or when the plant becomes root-bound. Spring is the ideal time for repotting. Choose a pot that is only slightly larger than the current one to avoid overwatering.
Use a fresh, well-draining potting mix to provide adequate aeration and nutrients.
