Watering, pruning, propagation, and repotting details from plant data
Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch.
Reduce watering slightly in cooler months, but never allow the soil to dry out completely, as this can stress the fern and lead to browning fronds.
Remove any dead, damaged, or yellowing fronds at the base of the plant using clean, sharp scissors or pruners. This encourages new growth and maintains the fern's aesthetic appeal.
Pruning can be done anytime you notice unsightly fronds.
Arachniodes aristata is best propagated by dividing established clumps in spring. Carefully dig up the plant and separate healthy rhizomes with at least a few fronds and roots.
Replant the divisions immediately into suitable soil, watering them in well.
Repot your Prickly Shield fern every 2-3 years or when it becomes root-bound, ideally in spring. Choose a pot that is slightly larger than the current one and use a well-draining, peat-based potting mix.
Ensure the rhizome is at the same depth it was previously.
