Red ChokeberryAronia arbutifolia

Red Chokeberry prefers consistently moist soil, especially during its establishment phase. Water deeply when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry. In hotter, drier periods, increase watering frequency.

Avoid waterlogged conditions, as this can lead to root rot. Once established, it shows good drought tolerance but performs best with regular moisture.

Pruning is best done in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches.

To encourage vigorous growth and fruit production, consider thinning out older stems at the base. This also helps maintain an open canopy for better air circulation and light penetration.

Aronia arbutifolia can be propagated by seed, which requires a period of cold stratification. However, it also readily propagates from suckers or root cuttings taken in late winter.

Softwood cuttings can be taken in early summer and treated with rooting hormone. Division of established clumps in spring or fall is also effective.

Repotting is typically only necessary for container-grown plants when they become root-bound, usually every 2-3 years. Choose a pot that is one size larger than the current one. Use a well-draining potting mix.

Repot in early spring before new growth commences, ensuring the root ball is loosened slightly if necessary.
