Reed canary grass prefers consistently moist soil, especially during establishment and active growth. Water deeply when the top few centimeters of soil feel dry.

Once established, it is quite drought-tolerant, but will perform best with regular watering during dry periods to maintain lush foliage.

Pruning is usually minimal. In late winter or early spring, before new growth emerges, remove any dead or damaged foliage. This helps tidy the plant and encourages fresh, vigorous spring growth.

Cut back to the ground level to remove old stems.

Reed canary grass is easily propagated by division of established clumps in spring or autumn. It also readily self-seeds.

For vegetative propagation, simply dig up a mature plant and separate the rhizomes and root masses into smaller sections, replanting immediately.

Repotting is typically not necessary for this species as it is a vigorous perennial grass often grown in landscapes.

If container-grown plants become root-bound, repot them in spring into a larger container using a well-draining potting mix. This is more for managing its spread than for plant health.
